Tom Brogan introducing a lecture by Prof. Diamantis Panagiotopoulos at the Customs Building in Pacheia Ammos in 2017.
Since 1997 the Study Center has hosted a diverse series of lectures by local and visiting archaeologists. These events bring together the wider community working on Crete and offer a chance for colleagues to discuss new finds and ideas. The lectures are held in the central court of the Study Center or in the refurbished Customs Building at the harbor of Pacheia Ammos. Several events have also been cross-listed as part of the Minoan Seminar.

Jerolyn Morrison (right) serves a “Minoan Meal” at the Study Center in 2009. Similar events have been held on several occasions at the Study Center, in the town of Ierapetra, in the village of Anatoli, and at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens under Jerolyn Morrison’s careful leadership. The events are extremely popular and have given new meaning to the term “paleodiet.”

“Beyond Food: An Archaeobotanical Investigation into the Role of Plants within the Ritual Landscape of Bronze Age Crete,” Carly Henkel

Minoan scholars have attributed several ritual roles to plants (i.e. acting as focal points of worship, inducing ecstatic behavior, serving as sacrificial offerings, and facilitating ritual feasts) based on the study of archaeological artifacts, such as glyptic imagery, ceramic remains and faunal material.  Actual plant remains, however, have rarely been considered. This paper addresses the role of plants in Minoan cult practice from an archaeobotanical perspective, examining plant material recovered from key sites/contexts within the ritual landscape of Bronze Age Crete, namely peak sanctuaries, shrines, and cemeteries. The results provide new insights into the use of plants in Minoan ritual activity and, at the same time, indirectly test the already conceived ritual role of plants as inferred from other material evidence.
